We are pleased that you are considering a rigorous, college-preparatory course of study to launch you from childhood to adulthood. The Virtual Learning Academy is ideal for motivated students whose goal is to prepare themselves academically for college, but who also want or need a flexible schedule.A female VLA student performing with an unknowb male during a dance intensive over the summer

Many of our students are active in the Sacramento theatre and dance communities. They appreciate the flexible schedule because they are able to complete all of their work before rehearsals and dance classes. Many Juniors and Seniors choose to dual enroll at a junior college. Since they are not in a highschool classroom all day, their schedule is open when college classes are in session! Other students simply appreciate being able to complete their school work when they work best. Parents often find that when their student's schedule is no longer dictated by school hours or hours of homework in the evening hours, that their family becomes more calm and relaxed.

How do we provide a flexible schedule while still maintaining high standards? First, all students meet the requirements for application to the University of California System. All of our English, History, Science, and Math classes are a-g approved. We do not offer credit recovery or core subject classes that are not college prepratory classes. VLA graduation requirements are often more rigorous than your local highschool.

Second, all of our courses are offered online. This means students do not have to sit in a classroom all day, every day. Instead, they use our online portal to view learning activities and complete work when it is convenient for them. School work is no longer limited to 8-4. To compliment their online experience and provide opportunities for labs, class discussions, and collaborative learning students also attend classroom based workshops, 6-7 hours a week. This leaves the rest of the week open for them to plan their own school work schedule and participate in activities outside of the school experience.
